Ticket to Ride Board Train

Ticket to Ride Board Train is a popular board game designed by Alan R. Moon and published by Days of Wonder. It’s a family-friendly and engaging train-themed strategy game that can be enjoyed by both adults and children alike. The game’s objective is to build railroad routes across a map of various regions, connecting cities and completing specific destination tickets to score points

In the cross-country train adventure game Ticket to Ride, players must collect and match train cards to win railway routes that connect cities across North America.

The more miles travelled, the more points are earned.

Additional points are awarded to players who connect two distant cities with their Destination Tickets, as well as to the person who constructs the longest continuous railway.

Game Components

The game typically comes with the following components:

  1. Game board: A colorful map representing a region or country with various cities and routes.
  2. Train cards: Colored cards representing different types of train cars (red, blue, green, yellow, black, and white).
  3. Destination tickets: These cards show specific routes between cities that players need to connect to earn points.
  4. Bonus cards: Some editions may include bonus cards that give additional points for fulfilling specific conditions during gameplay.
  5. Train pieces: Plastic train tokens of various colors used to claim routes on the game board.
  6. Scoring markers: Tokens or pieces used to track players’ scores.
  7. Rulebook: Provides instructions on how to play the game.

icket to Ride Board Train Gameplay

The game begins with players choosing destination tickets from a set of random cards. These tickets indicate specific routes they must complete to earn points at the end of the game. Players keep their destination tickets secret from others.

On their turn, players have several options:

  1. Draw Train Cards: Players can draw train cards from the face-up cards or the deck. These cards are used to claim routes on the board.
  2. Claim a Route: Players can spend the required number of train cards of a specific color to claim a route between two cities on the map. Once claimed, the route is occupied by their colored train pieces.
  3. Draw Destination Tickets: Alternatively, players can draw additional destination tickets, but they must keep at least one of them.

Building Routes and Scoring

Players work to connect their train routes across the map, trying to complete their destination tickets while blocking opponents from completing theirs. Longer routes and connecting more distant cities earn more points. Players also earn points for completed destination tickets, even if they didn’t manage to connect all the cities on them.

End Of the Game

The game ends when one player is down to two or fewer of their train pieces. Afterward, players reveal their completed destination tickets and add or deduct points accordingly. Unfulfilled destination tickets result in negative points. The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.

Designer’s Notes

My aim with Ticket to Ride was to create a game that combined my passion of route-building games and railroads in the most straightforward manner while still being enjoyable to play no matter how many times you played it.

Additionally, I wanted to emphasize the importance of creating coast-to-coast roads. I’m frequently asked if I foresaw the game’s success. However, I would have designed it twenty years earlier if I had known that.

USA 1910

The card expansion for the first version of the board game Ticket to Ride is called USA 1910. It consists of 181 new big format cards, the same size as those in Ticket to Ride Europe, including 35 new Destination Tickets, a new GlobeTrotter bonus card for completing the most tickets, and a full replacement deck that includes every card from the original game deck.

A new rulebook is also included, providing players with three new methods to play the game of Ticket to Ride: Big Cities, which uses just tickets to specific big cities, and the Mega Game, which uses all the tickets. The 1910 rules are also included.

When you play Ticket to Ride, the USA 1910 cards and rules variations will significantly alter your strategy and tactics. Even seasoned railroaders will be surprised by them, and your family and friends will enjoy countless hours of new entertainment.
